Looking for Winners: Batch Testing Trading Systems

This article demonstrates how to use pattern scanner to batch test, rank and filter trading system with system equity. We will use Jeff Cooper Expansion Breakout trading system and apply it on NASDAQ 100 symbols list as an example.

Backtesting 1

The following is a step by step guide to create a batch testing setup:

– At NeoTicker main menu select Window> New> Pattern Scanner.
– Right click on pattern scanner select Setup from the popup menu.
– At option tab ranking dropdown box select rank by indicator; change ordering to descending; at input select symbol list as input and click on the […] box on the right hand side of NASDAQ 100; this complete the setting at options tab of pattern scanner.

Backtesting 2

– At data tab change days to load to 250 (one year), since we are testing NASDAQ 100 and default time setup is for US stocks so no other setting changes is necessary.

Backtesting 3

– At Indicator tab click on add button and select Jeff Cooper Expansion Breakouts Part1, hit apply button. Set C1 (condition 1) to “>” and change Value to zero this means system result will show up when it is greater than zero, change C2 to NA to have to scanner ignore condition two.

Backtesting 4

This completes the setup of a scan that run through NASDAQ 100 and will list all systems final equity as a result.

If we change the comparison condition in indicator tab, it will made the scanner filter by a different criteria. For example only show list of symbols that are making money, change value field after C1 to 50000 (since starting capital is 50000), the scanning result will only show symbols that has equity greater than initial capital.
